In 1992, Dr. Talalay and his team at Johns Hopkins University, in the USA, were able to isolate and identify sulforaphane glucosinolate, a compound found naturally in broccoli and to a lesser extent in other crucifers.
Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica Plenck) is a plant of the Brassicaceae family, commonly referred to as crucifers. This family of plants contains sulfur compounds called glucosinolates, which can be converted, thanks to an enzyme known as myrosinase, into other substances called isothiocyanates and indoles. The myrosinase enzyme is released from broccoli itself when it is crushed or chewed, since it needs moisture to be activated, but also through
the action of the intestinal microbiota.
The ingredient containing activated NutriSGS ®, Sulforaphan Smart ®, is formulated in a bilayer structure, with the glucosinolate-rich extract, mainly glucoraphanin, in the core and the myrosinase extract (MYR) in the outer layer. The established encapsulation conditions allow the capsule to reach the intestine practically intact and to disintegrate once there. The dual core maximizes the bond between enzyme and reagent (GRP) because it keeps both components close together, reducing their diffusion through the intestine and therefore increasing the transformation ratio in the intestine, where absorption occurs

Several clinical studies indicate that, of the amount of sulforaphane that we could generate by eating broccoli, usually less than 1% ends up being generated where it should be absorbed. With this ingredient, we achieve that the generation of sulforaphane is independent of the state of the individuals microbiota, and it releases it into the intestine, being at least 2,000 times more potent than the same amount of broccoli. In other words, 1 gram of the Sulforaphan-Smart product is equivalent to the intake of between 2 and 5 kg of
broccoli.
The bioavailability of sulforaphane after its passage through the digestive tract is of paramount importance when considering its benefits. If we had an extract rich in unencapsulated glucoraphanin and with free myrosinase, the level of transformation into sulforaphane would be minimal (around 5%) due to the free diffusion of both compounds and which would begin during the gastric phase. In the case of Sulforaphan Smart ®, diffusion begins once in the intestine and due to the bilayer in such a slow proportion that it allows its enzymatic transformation. This demonstrates the importance of dual encapsulation.
According to bioavailability data, the conversion rate of glucoraphanin to active sulforaphane in the ingredient Sulforaphan Smart® is 35%.
