L-Carnitine: what it is and how it works in the body
L-carnitine is a compound naturally present in the body, synthesised from the amino acids lysine and methionine, and is found mainly in tissues with high energy demands, such as muscle and heart.
The physiological role of L-carnitine is related to energy metabolism. Its main function is to act as a transporter of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria, where these lipids are used as an energy substrate.
