Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.)
The name Glycyrrhiza derives from the Greek glykys “sweet” and rhiza “root”. In ancient times, the name was Latinized and modified to “liquorice”. Glabra from Latin glaber, meaning “soft”, referring to the soft
shells.
Licorice is native to Asia Minor and the Caucasus. It is found in the Mediterranean basin, in the Balkans and in the Middle East. It grows in deep and mostly clay and riparian lands. The active part containing the active ingredients is the root.
It is a lively shrub of the legume family, with a very long, branched, cylindrical, creeping and brownish rhizome; the stem can measure up to 2 meters. Its leaves are pinnate, oppositely arranged, with a swollen petiole and are divided into oval, whole and slightly viscous leaflets. The flowers are violet and are arranged in spikes, whose long peduncle grows at the base of the leaves and appears between May and July. Its fruits are pods up to 2.5 cm long and the root is collected in autumn

There are 3 main differences with conventional licorice-based supplements:
- The plant: Glavonoid™ uses an Asian variant of the species (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.) that has a high concentration of a variety of polyphenols, especially prenylflavonoids, including Glabridin (3%), which differentiates its nutritional profile and functions from other species and licorice extracts.
- The composition: a patented extraction method is used to concentrate the polyphenol, which increases potency and minimizes impurities.
- The extraction method: Glavonoid™ uses oil extraction. Currently, all the extracts we find on the market are aqueous (water).
