Do you know Ginkgo?

Ginkgo biloba is a unique tree in the world, native to China. It is one of the longest-living trees, and can live up to 2500 years. And for more than 2000 years, it has been used for ornamental and therapeutic purposes, especially in Traditional Chinese Medicine. For Chinese monks, it is a sacred tree, whose leaves they have used to preserve mental functions

.

Those responsible for the beneficial actions of Ginkgo biloba are the flavonoids (ginkgoflavonoglycosides) and terpenoids (ginkgosides and bilobalides), which are mostly found in the leaves so characteristic of this tree. These specific compounds increase central and peripheral blood circulation and, as a consequence, the irrigation of organic tissues becomes more efficient

.

There are studies that state that Ginkgo biloba leaves help maintain mental well-being and concentration in daily life, good cognitive function and memory when we get older, as well as improve concentration problems in young people during study. It also facilitates peripheral circulation and contributes to proper hearing and vision, and has antioxidant potential, which protects our brain from oxidative damage. Several researches have studied its potential in treating Cold Hands and Feet Syndrome (Raynauds Disease), in reducing cognitive decline and in relieving stress and improving mood

.

In the market we can find food supplements made from Ginkgo biloba leaf extracts. It is recommended to consume those that have a high standardization in their active ingredients. In addition, most plant compounds have low bioavailability in our body, so those that bind with phospholipids allow a better absorption of the active ingredient and, therefore, a better action

in the body.

Ginkgo biloba leaf extracts are well tolerated by the body. However, it is not recommended for use in people who have experienced an episode of epilepsy, as Ginkgo biloba can cause seizures. It is also not recommended to consume if you are pregnant, want to be pregnant, or are breastfeeding. You should also check with your doctor if you are taking blood thinners
