ProbiTec® Akkermansia is a food supplement based on pasteurised Akkermansia muciniphila MucT™ together with vitamin B2, which helps care for the intestinal mucosa. In Europe, pasteurised Akkermansia muciniphila MucT™ is the only form of Akkermansia approved for use as a food supplement, deemed safe by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
Akkermansia muciniphila is a beneficial microorganism that lives in the human intestinal mucosa. It is present in the human gut from infancy, and its abundance increases with maturity. In adults, it makes up between 0.5% and 5% of the gut microbiota under optimal conditions. According to the scientific evidence (Cani et al., 2022; Plovier et al., 2017), it has the capacity to positively influence the integrity of the intestinal barrier and support healthy metabolic conditions.
Unlike traditional probiotics, the mechanism of action of pasteurised Akkermansia muciniphila does not depend on its ability to actively colonise the gut, but rather on the interaction of various molecules derived from its cell structure (primarily proteins) with the intestinal membrane. Because these bacterial proteins do not need to colonise, they interact directly with the gut in a healthy way.
