What is ProbiTec ^{® Levura Plus}?

ProbiTec ^® Levura Plus is a dietary supplement containing probiotics with a total count of at least 5 billion cell-forming units (CFU) and vitamin B2.

• Saccharomyces cerevisae var boulardii, is a beneficial yeast with a probiotic action that, together with the lactic-acid bacteria Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, contributes to the balance of the intestinal microbiota in situations in which it may be compromised, such as the consumption of certain medications or while traveling.
• In addition, it contains vitamin B2 (riboflavin), which contributes to energy metabolism and the maintenance of the mucous membranes under normal conditions.

What is the microbiota? What function does it have?

The microbiota is the group of bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites that live inside us, colonizing the intestine and other places such as the skin and the mouth. We have between 1-2 kg of bacteria in our digestive tract, which is 100 trillion microorganisms or 10 times more than the number of cells in the human body. This microbiota is comprised of between 300 and 1000 different species, although the majority (99%) probably come from only 30-40 species. An adequate population of bacteria facilitates, among other functions, digestive development, the normal absorption of nutrients and other unsuitable bacteria to colonize this space

Saccharomyces cerevisae var boulardii:
a more resistant variety than most probiotics

Saccharomyces cerevisae var boulardii is a natural yeast that was originally isolated from lychee and mangosteen fruit by French scientist Henri Boulard, who observed natives of Southeast Asia chew the skin of lychee and mangosteen in an attempt to control cholera and diarrhea (1).
